WHO adds new ACT against malaria, releases new treatment guidelines

malariaThe World Health Organization (WHO) has added a new Artemisinin based combination therapy to the existing one in its new guidelines for the treatment of malaria released Tuesday. The guidelines emphasize testing for malaria before treatment---a a critical step forward in the fight against malaria as it will allow for the targeted use of ACTs for those who actually have malaria.

 
Plan to reintroduce death penalty by Mauritian Government opposed

The Mauritian Prime Minister’s recent announcement that he was planning to reintroduce the death penalty in an attempt to reduce drug trafficking in the country, if successfully passed,   would bring on a public health disaster and drive injecting drug use underground in a country where some 90 per cent of HIV infections are among injecting drug users (IDUs), the International Harm Reduction Association (IHRA) said Tuesday.

child infected with malariaExxon Mobil Corporation announced today a $3.5-million grant to the Global Health Group at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), to expand its core support for an unprecedented malaria elimination effort in southern Africa.

Hundreds of millions of dollars have been wasted on rural water projects in Africa, threatening the health and livelihoods of millions of vulnerable people according to a forthcoming briefing paper by the International Institute for Environment and Development. The announcement comes ahead of the UN’s World Water Day (22 March). 

A new survey released recently in Geneva by the International Union Against Cancer found that knowledge about cancer facts, including the risks from smoking, are lacking in low-income countries. The two low-income countries interviewed were Kenya and Nigeria.

Researchers in Kenya have indicated that come May this year there will be inadequate grain supply fueling another round of food prices due to high demand and low supply of food. Scientists are however optimistic that modern biotechnology could be a great solution to the existing problem.

A team of two youths from Germany are set to go on a cycle tour across Eastern and Southern Africa beginning today to highlight on the dangers Africa faces from climate change.
