Food Security: More investment in water storage needed

Against a backdrop of extreme weather wreaking havoc around the world, a new report by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), warns that increasingly erratic rainfall related to climate change will pose a major threat to food security and economic growth, especially in Africa and Asia, requiring increased investment in diverse forms of water storage as an effective remedy.

The inaugural African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) has closed in Accra, Ghana, with experts vowing to accelerate the transformation of agriculture in Africa and tackle food security.

Taking aim at climate change in the landmark United Nations building in New
York, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today launched a new campaign, “Cool UN,” that will reduce the use of air conditioning, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and save money.

Support for International Change, an NGO working in Tanzania Monday launched a new curriculum on World AIDS Day, available in English and Kiswahili. 

 “For a quick stand I charge Ksh. 200 (USD3) but a one night stand can fetch up to Ksh. 1,200, (USD 15)” says Wairimu, a Commercial Sex worker in Nairobi, Kenya. “However, seldom is this money enough to meet my needs and afford me a decent living.” Most of it, she says, is sucked up by medical check ups to cushion her from the threat of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
