A new initiative to assure and improve the quality of pharmacology and in vitro data from laboratories investigating patient responses to antimalarial drugs has been launched by the WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN).

Ten leading aid agencies today called for a 'surge' in the humanitarian effort to help 10 million people at risk of acute hunger across the Sahel region of West and Central Africa . The centre of the crisis is Niger, where seven million people, almost half the population do not have enough food. 

West Africa continues to be one of the most active areas of pandemic influenza transmission. The region is joined with that of Southeast Asia where pandemic influenza persists in spreading. According to WHO, more than 213 countries and overseas territories or communities have reported laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009, including at least 16813 deaths.

Safaricom has unveiled a new Base Transmission Station (BTS) in Kacheliba, West Pokot. The rollout of the new unit, which has been put up at an estimated cost of Kshs 23 million, is in line with the company’s commitment to enhance the quality of communication in all areas across the country

A new data by the WHO to be published in this week's edition of The Lancet on Pneumococcal disease reveals that Kenya, and countries in sub-Saharan Africa are leading in the number of young children who die out of the disease and Dr. Fred Were, National Chairman of the Kenya Paediatric Association is quoted as saying more than 16,000 Kenyan children die of it annually – that is one child every 32 minutes.  Any one of our children dying of a preventable disease is one too many, particularly when affordable solutions are now available to our country through the GAVI Alliance.

Upstream Biosciences Inc. has reported that its novel drug candidates to treat malaria have demonstrated good safety in their first toxicity tests in animals. 

The second all-Africa Carbon Forum will launch with an opening ceremony at the United Nations Gigiri complex, Nairobi, Kenya on Wednesday.
