A new data by the WHO to be published in this week's edition of The Lancet on Pneumococcal disease reveals that Kenya, and countries in sub-Saharan Africa are leading in the number of young children who die out of the disease and Dr. Fred Were, National Chairman of the Kenya Paediatric Association is quoted as saying more than 16,000 Kenyan children die of it annually – that is one child every 32 minutes. Any one of our children dying of a preventable disease is one too many, particularly when affordable solutions are now available to our country through the GAVI Alliance.
