Kairos Futura, an artist-led futurist organization, exploring the intersection of art, activism, and futures thinking, invites the public to engage with its ongoing exhibition, Hakuna Utopia? In Search of Micro-Utopias. This project, running through December 15th 2024 at Kairos Atelier and various locations across Nairobi, showcases projects that envision a more just and sustainable future for the city.
“Hakuna Utopia?” offers a unique opportunity to explore Nairobi through an interactive lens. Visitors can obtain a Utopia Passport, a personalized guide to the exhibition and its associated “micro-utopias” located throughout the city. By visiting these sites – community gardens, art installations, environmental initiatives, and more – and engaging with the projects, participants can collect stamps in their passports. This interactive element encourages exploration of often-overlooked neighbourhoods and highlights the grassroots efforts driving positive change.
In addition to the passport, a collaborative Utopia Map visually represents the challenges and opportunities facing Nairobi. The map, displayed at Kairos Atelier, pinpoints the locations of the micro-utopias and provides information about each project. It serves as a powerful tool for raising awareness about social and ecological issues while celebrating community-led solutions.
Envision Your Own Utopia: “Utopia Interventions” Workshops
Alongside the exhibition, Kairos Futura is hosting a series of “Utopia Interventions” workshops. These workshops offer an in-depth experience where participants engage in future thinking, design thinking, and worldbuilding to create their visions for a better future. Participants will develop “Utopia Interventions” – tangible projects addressing pressing social and ecological challenges.”
The ‘Hakuna Utopia?’ exhibition and ‘Utopia Interventions’ workshops offer complementary ways to engage with the idea of utopia,” said Kairos Futura co-director, Abdul Rop. “The passports and map encourage exploration and highlight existing initiatives, while the workshops empower individuals to become active agents of change and create their own visions for a better future.”
This initiative is made possible through the support of Crtve Development’s We!Are Unmuted campaign.
