In an ambitious, and dare I say, unprecedented move to battle global climate change, Johann Hoschtialek, a Grenadian father and environmental advocate, has announced the launch of the 195in365 initiative, set to hit the ground running in the second quarter of 2025. This groundbreaking project seeks to ignite a worldwide movement for environmental consciousness by visiting 195 countries in 365 days, engaging youth and communities along the way.
In an exclusive with Kenyan journalist Edwin Austin, the founder, Johann Holstischek noted that the journey will involve traversing over 140 countries by land, covering 100,000 kilometers with a fleet that includes diesel-powered buses, semi-trucks with specialized trailers for education and entertainment, and notably, an electric semi-truck leading the way.
This global expedition not only aims to highlight the urgency of climate action but also to showcase the transition to sustainable practices, engaging communities and inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards.
“Our vision is clear and unwavering: a world where every country is actively engaged in the fight against climate change by teaching and sharing solutions, and where youth are at the forefront of this global movement. 195in365 aims to inspire a new generation of environmental leaders, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and determination to make a lasting impact,” he said.
Johann, once dubbed a “nerd” for his early environmental activism in the ’80s, has now transformed that passion into a movement that spans continents. His journey from Grenada to Austria and back has shaped his vision for a world where environmental responsibility transcends borders and socio-economic divides.
“If my house is on fire, do I call for a fire truck that runs on diesel or wait till it’s an all-electric truck?” Johann posed this metaphorical question to underline the urgency and complexity of climate action.
To address this, 195in365 will use a fleet of 20 diesel-powered sleeper buses and 10 semi-diesel trucks equipped with specialized trailers for kitchens, an innovation center, and a mobile stage. However, in a nod to sustainable practices, an electric semi-truck will lead the convoy, symbolizing the transition to cleaner energy, with youth participants taking turns driving an electric camper around the globe.
Johann adds that, “Each country has the potential to be involved and now that we have begun the process, we need you to see it to fruition. At the end of it all, it is in everyone’s interest to see the youth of the world pick up the baton and run with it. It is our responsibility to give them the tools to do it. The time is now to Make a Change,”
In the words of the leader of the convoy, Commander Griffith, a former coast guard Commander with UN security experience, “We are preparing to embark on this audacious mission. As custodians of this planet our mission is noble, essential and will leave this world a better place. The journey will be filled with personal growth, struggle, inspiration and appreciation.”
Hoschtialek’s personal story is one of commitment and community. Raising his three daughters in Grenada, where traditional values like “it takes a village to raise a child” still resonate, he and his family have been actively involved in local sustainability efforts. His daughter’s initiatives at school, from recycling to composting, have laid the groundwork for broader environmental education and action.
Historical Context
The 195in365 initiative gained international attention when Johann Holstischek’s daughter, Jovana Holstischek, was selected as Grenada’s Youth Representative at COP27, where they connected with a global network of young environmentalists. This experience solidified the vision for a worldwide youth-led movement.
“We’re not just about highlighting the problems,” Johann explains, “but about engaging, educating, and empowering the next generation to be stewards of our planet. We’ll use our platforms, from giant LED screens to interactive innovation centers, to show what’s possible when we unite for a common cause.” These massive screens and campaigns will also offer a chance for advertiser’s to leverage the global audience, with Johann stating they’re ready to collaborate with partners willing to make use of this global advertising opportunity.
Months before the convoy gets moving, Johann says they’ve received numerous requests and support from countries they intend to visit, with other nations agreeing to meet and join the convoy one or two countries prior to their own. This not only underscores the initiative’s magnetic power, but also bolsters the conversation around climate change and the urgent need that exists in bridging awareness with meaningful action. “We’re ready to start. As soon as we’re settled on the financial part, because that’s what is holding us back, we’ll begin, hopefully in the second quarter of this year.”
This initiative does not shy away from the realities of current environmental practices. By starting with diesel vehicles, it acknowledges the existing infrastructure while pushing for a future where electric and renewable solutions are the norm. The journey will showcase both the challenges and the innovations in sustainability across different countries, fostering a dialogue on how to transition effectively to green technologies.
As the convoy prepares to set off, the world watches with hope and encouragement. “The 195in365 initiative is not just a journey around the globe; it’s a call to action, a testament to what can be achieved when we commit to change, and an invitation for every nation, every youth and interested party, to join in putting out the fire that threatens our collective home.” Johann Holstischek said.
